Learning English while preparing for ShakeOut 2019

ESOL Intensive

Palmerston North ESOL Intensive class made an unscheduled visit to the hardware store as part of their preparations for Shakeout 2019.

ELPNZ ShakeOut 2019

While reading the survival items checklist together online they realised only one person in the class had a first aid kit at home and nobody had any stored water. After a quick look at the items online, they nipped around to Mitre 10 and checked out sizes and prices of water containers and first aid kits. There was lots of English speaking, listening, reading and numeracy practice!

Some students asked where things were and some helpful Mitre 10 staff gave tips about the different ones available. A shopper passing by told everyone about the advantage of lawnmowers with batteries (no smelly petrol needed)! We examined slug bait, bulbs and seeds and worked out the cheapest brand of buttercup pumpkin seeds.  The price of grafted tomato plants surprised everybody. A keen cleaner checked out New Zealand made floor mops with a staff member.

Nobody bought any survival kit items as it’s wiser to check a few different shops but some keen gardeners bought seeds and one pair bought some bright flowers, five for $10, very nice indeed!
