During the term break, several members of the ELP Porirua team went on a ‘Learn About Other Faiths’ workshop, facilitated by Spirit of Rangitane.

The workshop involved visiting the places of worship of four different faiths – Sikh, Hindu, Islam, and Buddhism.

The workshop helped our staff to further our understanding and respect of our learners and the broader communities within which we work.

When visiting each place of worship we learnt about the basic principles upon with the faiths are founded, summarised nicely by one of our teaching team:

‘Despite the variations in religious practice, or belief structures, a common thread throughout all the faiths was the importance of living the best life we can. The goal being to lead a good life, serve others, and do no harm. Regardless of what difference there may exist in an individual’s  ‘god or gods’, or their belief in an afterlife (or not), the common motivation seemed to be that living a life which follows those goals will impact the life we have in a positive way.’  The teacher concluded: ‘I found this approach to life positive and hopeful, and truly believe if we all tried to live our lives following these goals the world would be a considerably better place to live.’

Every member of the group that attended the workshop felt that it was very beneficial and that they learnt a lot about the different faiths, knowledge that helps them to see all faiths as equal.
