The celebration coincided with a visit from James McCulloch, ELPNZ’s new CE, who travelled from Wellington. “It was fantastic James was able to attend and meet everyone,’ says manager Sheryl Jackson.
“After saying a few words, James was also tasked with the most important job of the day – cutting the cake!”
Sheryl welcomed over 50 ‘ELPers’ – staff, volunteers, friends and local dignitaries – who came along to see the new space, enjoy a good catch up and sample some delicious nibbles.
“We were delighted that Jimmy Chen, Christchurch City Councillor, Liz Lovell, Chair of the Rata Foundation and Patrick O’Connor from PEETO Intercultural Development Trust could join us at the opening.”
“Renhuai Tu, one of our learners, plays the Erhu, a traditional Chinese stringed instrument. He thoroughly entertained us with his music.”
Sheryl says her staff pitched in to get the centre ready for the opening and, in the true spirit of community volunteering, one amazing ESOL home tutors, Colin West, went ‘over and above’ to help out. “Colin is certainly a handyman extraordinaire,” says Sheryl. “We’re really grateful to him for doing various jobs around the centre, such as putting up the letter box, pictures and noticeboards.”
Thanks to all who came along to join us in launching our centre’s new home!
