Diversity within the community

ESOL Literacy

Learners from our ESOL literacy classes and two of our English Language groups at our Auckland South centre recently partnered with students from Te Kura Maori O Nga Tapuwae students and learnt to say Maori greetings.

After lots of laughter and practice, learners were confidently greeting each other in Te Reo.  Afterwards, all of the students brought food for a shared lunch.  A special performance of the haka and a waiata was performed by the Te Kura Maori O Nga Tapuwae students which our learners thoroughly enjoyed.

Their young tutors also found it a positive experience. They were surprised at the cultural diversity of the class as they did not realise there were so many people from other cultures living in their community.

The class finished with a shared lunch for the learners and their new teachers. Due to the success of the day, we would like to continue visiting with other groups in the community.

This was a great way for all of the students to learn something of each other’s cultures.  Thank you to all of the teachers involved for organising such a lovely day and thank you to the students of Te Kura Maori O Nga Tapuwae for their time and efforts.  Haere rā until next time!

Here is a video of the haka which was performed for our classes:
