Jill Visser, a teacher at our Wellington Centre recently took her ESOL Intensive class to visit the new Wellington Tip Shop. The learners study English three times a week and are from Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Korea, China, Ukraine, Colombia, Thailand, Iraq, Syria, and Somalia. The visit was a great opportunity to learn new vocabulary and practise English all while learning about recycling and sustainability on a sunny day out of the classroom.
The class, with Jill's support, wrote a story and developed a classroom teaching resource to practice the English words they learnt on the trip. This is their story.
On Thursday the 5th of September the ESOL Intensive class walked to anew place in the city called the Te Aro Tip Shop. It was a beautiful sunny day. We were happy to be together.
The Tip Shop is at 2 Forresters Lane in Te Aro. When we got to the big sign, our teacher talked about what ‘Tip Shop’ means, what ‘waste’ means and what ‘drop-off’ means.
Our teacher asked us, “How do we protect the environment?”
The Te Aro Tip Shop helps protect the environment by helping people reduce their waste. People can recycle, repair or buy second hand goods there.
Here, Vikram is explaining the recycling of plastic and metal lids. The students are looking and listening to him.
He explained how old computers and laptops are given to the Tip Shop. He explained how they are fixed and then offered at low prices.
He talked about other second-hand things like TVs, microwaves, heaters, computers, and even wool.
There are lots of cheap things here, like big rolls of material, and curtains.
You can go in and use the sewing machines for free. You can also get your things repaired.
The Te Aro Tip Shop is a great place. You should go too!
