Support your community and volunteer as a home tutor. We provide free training and match you with a learner.
With your support we can provide free lessons to migrants and people with a refugee background. You are helping people in your community learn practical English so they can live, study and work in New Zealand.
Training for ESOL home tutor volunteers will be held at 186 Willis St, level 5 on the following dates:
Day 1: Thursday 15th August, 9am-5pm
Day 2: Friday 16th August, 9am-5pm
Day 3: Saturday 17th August, 9am-1pm
Follow-up session (recall): Tuesday 22nd October, 6pm-8pm
The Job Mentoring Service is for skilled migrants and refugees from non-English speaking backgrounds looking for work in the Wellington region.
You will be matched with a trained mentor who knows the New Zealand work environment and may have similar skills to you.

Mentors can help you:
● understand Kiwi workplaces and culture
● build professional networks
● search for a job
● understand a job description
● write a CV and cover letter
● prepare for a job interview.
You’ll be invited to free networking events and workshops to learn, and make friends and professional connections.
You can also connect with other jobseekers, and the service coordinator, in the weekly Job Seeker Meeting Group.
To be eligible for the Job Mentoring Service, you must meet all these criteria:
● English is not your first language, but you can communicate confidently in English
● you have a tertiary qualification and/or professional work experience in your home country
● you are new to the New Zealand job market
● you are entitled to work in New Zealand
● you are a New Zealand resident or citizen, or you have at least 6 months remaining on your visa.

Mentoring offers the chance to make a real difference in someone’s life.
You’ll be given training, resources, and ongoing support and advice to help you provide the best support possible.
To become a mentor, you must:
● know the New Zealand work environment and culture
● know where and how to look for jobs in Wellington (such as cover letters, CVs and interviews)
● have recent experience applying for jobs and working in Wellington
● have very strong written and spoken English
● have empathy for other cultures and the issues new migrants face when settling in New Zealand.
Job mentoring usually lasts 3 to 4 months, while your jobseeker develops the confidence to sustain them in their job search.
Mentors must commit to:
● a 1-day training session at our Willis Street office.
● face-to-face meetings, email, and phone contact with the jobseeker every 1 to 3 weeks
● occasional networking events.
Mentors must also contact the Job Mentoring Service coordinator with regular updates on developments, issues and successes.
The next training course for job mentors is on Saturday 9 November 2024 (9.30am -3.30pm) at English Language Partners Wellington. (Note: this date has changed from the previously advertised date of Saturday 28 September 2024.)

This programme is for people who pre-paid Immigration New Zealand for English lessons before they arrived in the country. An experienced, qualified teacher visits your home for lessons. You can decide on your personal learning goals with your teacher. Each lesson is designed to help you progress at your own speed.
