Volunteer as an ESOL home tutor

Support your community and volunteer as a home tutor.  We provide free training and match you with a learner.    

With your support we can provide free lessons to migrants and people with a refugee background.  You are helping people in your community learn practical English so they can live, study and work in New Zealand.

New Plymouth next training course starts in March

Training for ESOL home tutor volunteers will be held at the ELP Taranaki Centre, Level 3, 50 Devon Street West, New Plymouth on the following dates:

Day 1: Wednesday 5th March, 9am – 1pm

Day 2: Wednesday 12th March, 9am – 1pm

Day 3: Wednesday 19th March, 9am – 1pm

Day 4: Wednesday 26th March, 9am – 1pm

Day 5: Wednesday 9th April, 9am – 1pm

Day 6: Wednesday 16th April, 9am – 1pm

Learn English online

Learn in our small, online classes. English for work, everyday life and academic study. Part-time classes taught by qualified teachers. Classes for all levels.
Free for residents and citizens.

Classes for all levels & needs

Learn ‘Kiwi English’ in a class taught by our qualified teachers. Classes cover a range of levels and times and are held in local community venues.

New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL)

  • 34 hours per week (20 classroom hours, 14 hours of homework and self-study)

  • Study for an NZQA certificate and achieve NZQA Unit Standards in English Language

English for Job Seekers

  • Intensive, four-week course (12 hours per week)

  • Learn how to approach employers

  • Learn to tailor your CV for specific job applications

  • Prepare and practise for job interviews

  • Develop your professional networking skills

  • English level – Intermediate and above (confident users of English)

  • For people with a job (full-time, part-time, casually/seasonally or self-employed)

English for Migrants (PELT)

This programme is for people who pre-paid Immigration New Zealand for English lessons before they arrived in the country. An experienced, qualified teacher visits your home for lessons. You can decide on your personal learning goals with your teacher.  Each lesson is designed to help you progress at your own speed.

ESOL Home Tutoring

A trained volunteer visits you at home for about one hour each week. You can learn Kiwi English and more about our cultures for your life here in New Zealand. You can decide on your personal learning goals with your teacher.  Each lesson is designed to help you progress at your own speed.
