ELP Christchurch volunteer receives VOLCAN Recognition Award 2018

Volunteers

During National Volunteer Week, Volunteering Canterbury (Volcan) with Te Runaka ki Otautahi o Kai Tahu presented awards to recognise outstanding efforts and achievements by volunteers.

The awards were presented at a ceremony held in the Christchurch Civic Chambers by Carl Shaw, Hospital Manager and Executive Officer for Canterbury Charity Hospital. Entertainment was provided by the Papanui High School Pasifika Cultural Group.  Cynthia was nominated because of her outstanding voluntary contribution to the support of  English Language Partners Christchurch Centre learners.

Cynthia has been volunteering with English Language Partners Christchurch since 2005. She began as a volunteer ESOL home tutor, helping learners 1-to-1 with their English language. She worked with three different learners from 2005-2008. In September 2008 Cynthia began volunteering in our English Language Group classes assisting the class teacher and she has been volunteering weekly since then.

For the last few years Cynthia has volunteered in our Elementary and Lower Intermediate classes and has always shown great patience and care with our lower level learners. She is a dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer and teachers and learners alike have only positive things to say about her.

Cynthia is originally from the Philippines and has been able to use her own experience as a language learner to assist a huge number of learners. Teachers who have worked with Cynthia describe her as: a real asset in the classroom, positive, enthusiastic and encouraging, bubbly cheerful and beaming.

Cynthia has a wonderful personality and a warmth and openness that makes her approachable and easy to talk to. Her dedication to new members of the Christchurch community is commendable and we are extremely grateful for her many years of consistent service to our centre and learners.
