On Tuesday 19th November, Naenae Intermediate School’s Hauora Leaders organised a Bake Sale to support the Lower Hutt Centre of English Language Partners.
Naenae Intermediate, located in suburb of Naenae, Lower Hutt, is home to approximately 300 students from diverse backgrounds.
Hauora Leaders are students who lead activities that enhance the wellbeing of students. These activities can include trips, bake sales and classroom-based initiatives.
A bake sale is usually held once a year. In previous years, funds raised have supported the school or other worthy causes. This year, the Hauora Leaders chose to support English Language Partners, aligning with the school’s inquiry topic for the year: migration. Students across the school have been studying migration and sharing their own migration stories.
We spoke with two Hauora Leaders, who were key organisers of the Bake Sale. One leader, aged 12, moved to the Hutt from Tairāwhiti Gisborne five years ago.
Another leader, aged 13, is originally from Palestine and arrived in the Hutt six years ago. Her parents study at English Language Partners, so she understands the significant role the organisation plays in helping people from migrant and refugee backgrounds learn English for settlement in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Other students at Naenae Intermediate also have parents who study or work at English Language Partners, highlighting the connection between the two institutions in the Hutt community.
The Bake Sale began at 10:35am, when the morning tea bell rang. Students poured out of their classrooms into the courtyard, eagerly lining up to purchase baked goods. Hauora Leaders, wearing gloves, were ready to go, and were assigned a role - either handling money or serving food.
The baking, prepared by students and staff, included delicious treats like cookies, meringues, cupcakes, and slices.
The Bake Sale was a tremendous success, raising over $600 for English Language Partners’ Hutt Centre. Thank you very much, Naenae Intermediate, for your generous support!
