Cooking up some English

Helen Knott is one of our wonderful volunteers!

She trained in October 2020 and has been working with learner Bawi Zi, who’s from Myanmar, since November. Helen shares her cupcake cooking activity as a great way to learn more English – through the universal language of cooking!

A few weeks ago, my learner Bawi and I decided to have a ‘lesson in the kitchen’ to put her new ‘baking’ vocabulary to the test! We made vanilla cupcakes with icing, sprinkles, and a New Zealand flag to top it off.

The kitchen was a fun and rich English-learning environment for my learner and allowed her to test out casual conversation, practise reading the recipe and identifying all the vocabulary we had learnt in the previous week.

I would highly recommend a lesson in the kitchen to challenge your learner and have a good laugh with the added bonus of some yummy snacks!

Our thanks to Helen Knott for her teaching idea.

Join us as a volunteer! Many of our centres are holding their first volunteer ESOL Home Tutor training for 2021 soon – get  in touch with your nearest centre if you’d like to help a new Kiwi with English!
