Putting the Seoul into Auckland
Cheol's spirited participation enriches his community.
Cheol Jeong was drawn to tutoring in Seoul, South Korea, after he met several migrants having difficulty learning Korean and understanding the culture.
He attended a seminar on multicultural understanding and a course in Teaching Korean to Speakers of Other Languages.
As an immigrant here, he works as an ambassador for Heart of the City, giving advice to tourists on the streets of central Auckland.
He believes immigrants have the same problems as those in Korea, and wants to contribute to helping others settle.
Cheol trained as a volunteer with the North Shore centre early in 2010.
Trainees wish to enrich their lives with new experiences of other cultures. As the 28 volunteers on Cheol's course represented 12 different cultures, for Cheol, this wish was granted just by attending the training.
